How TomTom is Innovating Advanced Driver Assistance Systems UX
For CES 2025, TomTom partnered with PIGIAMA KASAMA to bring its vision for the future of advanced driver assistance navigation systems to life.
Leveraging TomTom’s cutting-edge technology and data, PIGIAMA KASAMA developed a real-time simulation to depict the experience of traveling in an autonomous vehicle. Using authentic, real-world data, users can experience a range of driving scenarios within an accurately recreated digital version of the city of Detroit.
The simulation seamlessly transitions between different driving situations, introducing users to an innovative cockpit view UX. Users will gain insights into how multiple data sources—such as vehicle sensor data and TomTom’s proprietary maps—integrate to provide crucial, real-time information, fundamentally transforming the driving experience.


Combining Sensors and Map Data
Most autonomous driving systems depend exclusively on sensor data, limiting the vehicle’s awareness to what the driver can visually perceive. However, sensor data alone often proves insufficient, especially in situations where roads are obscured by obstacles or adverse weather conditions like snow. This is precisely where advanced map data becomes essential. TomTom’s Orbis maps extend the car’s visibility and comprehension of its surroundings far beyond sensor limitations.
Real-time events such as traffic jams, road construction, and hazards cannot always be accurately predicted using sensor data alone. TomTom's sophisticated mapping technology bridges this gap, providing users with safer, more efficient, and reliable navigation experiences by anticipating and effectively managing such scenarios.




Real-life Driving Scenarios
Ensuring comprehensive coverage of diverse driving scenarios is vital for TomTom. Users must understand precisely how ADAS addresses complex navigation challenges, such as road hazards, sophisticated intersection designs like the Michigan U-turn, and traffic congestion. Moreover, effective and clear communication with drivers through both central and cluster displays is crucial. These interfaces clearly inform drivers about current actions being taken by the ADAS and suggest appropriate actions to ensure safe navigation.

Large-Scale, Real-Time, High-Fidelity Simulation
The simulation is centered on the city of Detroit, chosen for its complex urban infrastructure and notable landmarks, making it an ideal environment for testing autonomous driving navigation systems.
Utilizing the visual fidelity and technical capabilities of the Unity 6 game engine, PIGIAMA KASAMA successfully recreated a highly detailed and realistic 3D representation of Detroit. This ambitious project overcame significant technical challenges, including maintaining consistent quality and performance across various viewing scales.
The simulation seamlessly transitions between detailed cockpit views and expansive city-wide perspectives without sacrificing visual quality or performance.
